Taking care of your boat-towed sports life vest will prolong the life of the jacket. Follow these guidelines to keep it it in good shape and make it last for years to come.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Life of the PFD
Here's How:
- After using your life jacket allow it to drip dry before storing it away in a well ventilated space. This will prevent mold or mildew. Never dry a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) on a heat source such as a heater or radiator.
- Do not leave the personal flotation device in direct sunlight. This can cause the fibers in the material to break down.
- Care instructions are often written on the inside of the jacket. Most life vests may be washed by hand in a mild detergent.
- Wear a life jacket that has a secure fit. Do not alter the fit of the jacket. A vest that does not fit may not work properly.
- Examine your life vest frequently for rips and tears and check to make sure the seams and fabric are not compromised.
- Do not use a PFD for a pillow, cushion or boat fender. Using a PFD for anything other than its intended purpose can crush its contents and reduce jacket buoyancy. Likewise, don't place your PFD at the bottom of the pile with heavy items on top of it.
- Check the buoyancy of a life jacket in the water at least once a year by making sure your chin is above water and you are able to breathe easily.
- When purchasing a PFD consider one with a quick-drying and durable nylon shell and one with a plastic rustproof zipper.
