France's Patrice Martin Retires

DATELINE: 9-10-01

According to the Associated Press, France's Patrice Martin has announced his retirement from water skiing after spending more than 20 years at the highest levels of the sport. The 37-year-old Martin – the six-time defending Men's world overall champion – will not compete at the 2001 Water Ski World Championships, Sept. 24-30, in Recetto, Italy. Martin did not specify why he was retiring. Martin, who won the Men's world tricks title in 1979 at the age of 15, walks away from the sport at the top of his game. He set the Men's world overall record last May and won the U.S. Open Men's overall title the following month.
